Founded in 2008 and harnessing the power of their flagsFounded in 2008 and harnessing the power of their flagship beer Pine Belt Pale Ale Southern Star has grown in and around its area. Southern Star has adopted the growing idea of craft beer in cans. Canned beer carries a certain undue reputation among craft beer drinkers but is indeed a perfect vessel for craft beer. Cans cannot be light struck, they are completely recyclable, highly portable and very light.
Southern Star has three front line beers.
Buried Hatchet
Style: Strong American Stout
Packaging: Year Round (12 oz 4-packs)
Description: Jet-black in color, this monster smells of coffee and chocolate. The taste is much of the same, with hints of creamy toffee and roasted malt. Smooth and delicious, this medium bodied ale is all about the malts, but has enough hop bitterness to be balanced.
ABV: 8.25%
IBU: 50
Casey's Review:
Buried Hatchet pours a chocolate brown with a thick tan head. The beer is crystal clear in the glass and moderately dark with light brown highlights.
It smells of deep roast with chocolate influences. Heavy coffee is prominent but not overpowering.
The taste is similar to the aroma; deep roasted coffee with very nice chocolate on the backend similar to a darker style chocolate. The body is medium with welcoming carbonation.
Bombshell Blonde
Style: American Blonde Ale
Packaging: Year Round (12 oz 6-packs, Draught)
Description: A rich, creamy, golden colored ale fermented at a cool temperature to give a clean finish. Hints of yeasty bread and a touch of hops combine to make a beer that is truly more than the sum of its parts.
ABV: 5.25%
IBU: 20
Casey's Review:
Bombshell Blond pours a nice clear pale yellow with plenty of creamy white head that sticks to the glass and hangs around. This beer has a very nice grainy/yeasty smell with a touch of hops on the nose.
Refreshingly clean, probably due to low fermentation temperatures. This beer is very crisp without being overly so. There is a nice bread flavor here along with a nice hop note that gives this beer a great but not overwhelming complexity. This beer is a great example of an American Wheat.
