Homebrew Competition

Hopus Lackus

Belmont Party Supplies will be hosting an exiting homebrew competition this summer.  With the current hop shortage coming full circle, we are inspiring people to become  creative and try something new.  So we thought it would be fun to have a competition with the main requirement being that you may NOT use any hops in your recipe.  But that does not mean just brew a beer none reliant on hops.  We will be implementing a sliding scale up to five front ended points for degree of difficulty.  For instance you will receive as high as five points for an I.P.A. and down to zero points for a Scotch ale.  There are many spices and herbs out there that you can use for flavor, bittering, and preservatives so start researching.  A good idea people are talking about is brewing a couple 1-3 gal. batches to see what creates what taste before locking on a particular recipe.  The beers will be judged on Saturday July 19th at the Ohio Vets Bar-B-Q cook off with prizes of $200 1st place, $100 2nd, and $50 3rd.  This should make for a fun event coinciding with about 40 big rig smokers competing for the Ohio Bar-B-Q Championship.  We will also be holding a homebrew demonstration to peak non-brewers interest and bring new people into this great craft that we all so enjoy.  Entry forms will be available at Belmont Party Supply beginning June 1, 2008. A $5 entry fee will be collected at the time of turn in. Turn ins will be June 30th through July 13th. Beer will be judge BJCP guide lines.
